THE Exercise videos

Antihormonal therapy for prostate cancer has a number of positive effects, but also some side effects. The NEXT exercise programme will show you how physical activity and exercise can counteract both physical and psychological impacts.

It is important that the patient always consult their doctor before they start exercising. You can use NEXT as a guide for

devising a good exercise programme. We always recommend anyone with prostate cancer who is undergoing antihormonal therapy to start off with a programme conducted by professionals (coaches, physiotherapists, healthcare professionals etc.) in order to learn how to exercise properly and avoid injuries. This recommendation applies especially in cases where the disease has spread to the bones.

Warming up and
cardio exercise

The programme consists of four physical fitness exercises which can be used for warming up. In the case of cardio exercise, it is a good idea to exercise at intervals – in other words changing pace. For example, you can cycle quickly for 30 seconds, followed by 1 minute at a steady pace. You should preferably spend a minimum of 30 minutes on warming up and cardio exercise every time you exercise. There should be periods during the exercise where you are breathless and cannot speak whole sentences.

strength TRAINING (standard program):

When you progress from two to three sets, you can retain the same resistance until you do not find it hard any more. Once you have sufficient energy left, you can again increase the resistance slowly. When you reach Week 7 of your programme, you should cut down to three sets of 10 repetitions. Here, once again it is a good idea to increase the load slowly. It is also three sets of 10 repetitions. Continue exercising when you have completed the exercise programme, but feel free to increase the load if it gets too easy. If your muscles ache after exercise that is no bad thing. But nothing in your exercise should trigger pain or exacerbate existing pain.

It is best to exercise on all seven exercise machines every time you exercise. If you have to interrupt your exercise routine for some time, you could start over again with two sets of 15 repetitions and with reduced resistance.
